Between removing anything that I really hadn't worn since we moved to New York and accepting that I will probably never get back to the same size/shape that I was before having babies, there was a lot that needed to go.

I also got rid of a few pairs of shoes that were a little bit painful to
wear. When I was working at a desk all day, I could wear shoes that
pinched a bit and it was fine, but now that I don't have the luxury of
sitting all the time, it just doesn't work so well!

So here's a run-down of what a got rid of (because I know you're dying to see).

A great purchase from Forever Young shoes. My favorite part (which you can't really see in the picture) is the pink polka dots on the inside of the shoes. So cute!

I got these from Zappos.com after getting the same style in a bright
green. They're so beautiful and came in so many great colors, I just
had to get another pair! (Unfortunately, in the great clothing purge, I got rid of the few things I had that actually matched this so it seemed silly to hold on to them.)

I got these for super cheap at Payless (something like $7). The snake print is so unique and fun!

I got these at Mervyn's in the summer of 2008 (I miss that place...they use to have some really cute shoes). I love me a good espadrille!

Also from Mervyn's. These shoes are what really got me going with fun colors of shoes.

I had been looking for red heels for a while and finally found these at Mervyn's. (What did I tell you about Mervyn's having great shoes?)

These are handmade shoes from Chile that I got in high school to go with one of my formal dresses.

I got these to go with a dress I bought to wear at Severin's cousin Kristin's wedding.

These are the first slingbacks I ever bought. I went shopping with my sister Janae specifically looking for sling backs and t-straps. I found these at Payless--I especially love the floral print on the bottom. These shoes always had a bit of a 70's vibe for me (am I crazy?) which I thought was fun.

I went to see Mamma Mia! with my friend Lia while Severin and Lia's husband, Peter, saw The Dark Knight. We got out before they did so we did some shopping and I picked these up at Payless.

Found these on clearance at JC Penney and loved them immediately (I love a unique shoe). Luckily, I came home and actually had things I could wear them with!

I really don't remember where/when/why I got these shoes....but they're cute! :)

Got these from Payless on the shopping trip with Janae when I was looking for
t-straps and slingbacks. They were my first pair of t-straps.

Got these at Payless back at the beginning of my pumps phase. Don't you
love that little cutout flower on the inside? Sometimes the cutest part
about shoes is the inside. Too bad nobody else sees it!

A few years ago I spent some birthday money on a few new pairs of shoes at Charlotte Russe. I just loved the bright color of these (and I happened to have a jacket and a purse that matched).
You'll notice a stark contrast between my newest pairs and most of my other pairs, namely heel height (or lack thereof). As I suspected/feared, high heels just really aren't that practical for city living. I walk almost everywhere I go, and I'm usually pushing a double stroller too. And as much as I love heels, I really don't want to walk 20 blocks in them on a regular basis.

Come to find out, despite having what some people would call a ridiculous number of shoes, what i don't have a lot of are sandals or open-toed shoes that are flat, a.k.a. good for walking. As the weather warmed up here I was not loving the idea of wearing socks/closed-toed shoes all the time so I used some birthday money to get a couple pairs of basic sandals. This may have to become a tradition as long as we live here!

Now I know some of you are feeling bad for all my high heels that never get worn anymore (I would be if I were you). Never fear, I still wear them. Of course, not nearly as often as I did before. Mostly just for church (and even then, I wear flats to walk to and from church and only change to heels when I get there), but every once in a while I will wear them around the house if I know I don't have to go anywhere far that day. I do miss them sometimes, but there is a time and a season for everything, right?Lissa Nelsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584911371004698510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1227418882148304040.post-34514402787266882852012-10-27T12:03:00.001-07:002012-10-27T13:41:39.404-07:00Moving to NYCWe have now been in NYC for a couple weeks. Throughout the moving process, I have had to force myself to make some tough choices about getting rid of stuff. I'm not a hoarder by any means, but I do have a hard time getting rid of things sometimes. So we got rid of quite of bit of stuff before we left, but it was mostly household items--I did not really do much with my clothes and shoes. Once we got here and started moving things in, I had to face the hard truth that I just had too much to fit in our closet (even though it is a walk-in). I knew in my heart of hearts that this would probably end up happening, but it was just too hard to get rid of things until I really faced the reality.

So as I filled the closet, I made myself get rid of things that I really just don't wear that much anymore, or I know I won't wear much at all now that I'm a stay-at-home mom instead of a working girl, or that are similar enough to other things in my closet that I can live without them. So I have reduced my total number of shoes from 108 to 94 (I know 94 is still a lot, but hey, I'm still me). These are the ones I'm getting rid of:
I got these ones from Payless probably 8 years ago or so and was totally in love with them for a long time. Something about them gave me kind of 70's vibe that I thought was super fun. One of the straps broke a few years ago and I actually bothered to have it repaired instead of just throwing them out because I like them that much. But they have started feeling a little clunky and I just don't wear them much anymore so it was time to go.
Back before my shoe collection really became what it is today, I just needed a basic pair of black church shoes so I got these. As I went through looking for ways to downsize, I did have to wonder how many pairs of plain black heels one person really needs so these had to go.

I bought these in high school (almost 12 years ago) to wear to a semi-formal dance. I loved them for SO long that even though I haven't worn them for a couple years, I was having a hard time letting them go. It is finally time.

I called these my Cinderella shoes. I got them to wear with my bridesmaid's dress for my sister's wedding. The dress was actually REALLY cute, but was a little bit short for me to wear comfortably so I sadly got rid of it. I have a similar pair of white open-toed shoes, so I had to choose one to get rid of.

I got these at Forever Young shoes (oh how I miss that place!) when I was just beginning to get into pumps. Similar to the black shoes I talked about earlier, I had to wonder how many pairs of plain brown heels I really needed so these hit the chopping block.

I got these at Walmart because they were just a fun color and good for wearing to the pool and such, but I don't love the rubber strap and I've just kind of stopped wearing them.

I got these when I was doing my student teaching (more than 5 years ago, if you can believe that) because I needed a good mid-size heel to wear with pants. Now I have several options and these just don't get chosen often enough to warrant keeping them around.

These were one of my more brave purchases, back before I really had many pairs of colorful shoes. I still think they are super cute, but I have never worn them much (and one of the dresses that I did wear them with I am also getting rid of).

I got these on clearance at DSW shoes because I needed a fairly flat pair of black shoes. I have since found other ones I like better and basically stopped wearing these.

I got these at Charlotte Russe (they have some SUPER cute shoes). I was looking for red heels and not having much luck, so I got these espadrilles instead. I have since purchased a couple pairs of red heels and the color on these has been faded a bit by the sun, so after much debate I finally decided I had to let go.

So those are the ones to go. Now that we living in the big city and spending ridiculous amounts of money on rent, I probably won't be able to get new shoes nearly as much. But I do have a new goal that anytime I get something new, I have to get rid of something I already have. We'll see if I'm actually able to do that! :)

Since that post, I have purchased 4 new pairs of shoes and they all had at least a 4 inch heel (as a side note on that, check out the updated slideshow below). I keep telling myself that if I'm going to buy shoes, I need to buy more flats or at least shorter heels--ones that I could actually walk around in all day--but when I get on a website and start looking at shoes, logic seems to go out the window. All the high-heeled shoes are just so stinking pretty!! I mean, look at this picture I found on google:

Yeah, those flats are cute. But look at those heels. Va-va-voom! And they're not even a fun design or color.

I've heard some people talk about how high heels just objectify women and such other nonsense. You can feel that way if you want, but I don't. When I'm walking around in my high heels, I just feel good. Not only do I feel like I look good, but I feel good about myself all around. I feel like I can do anything (except maybe walk up the 2 large flights of stairs to my office...the elevator is my friend). I feel empowered! I start walking around all sassy-like thinking "Man, I am so awesome. I am like the most awesome person in the world." Okay, maybe not that extreme, but I do feel pretty great. It also doesn't hurt that heels do so much more for your legs than flats.

So I guess the emotional high is why, when I see a cute high heel, my brain turns to mush and instead of thinking about how I really don't need any more high heels in my soon-to-be New York City life, I just drool and click "Add to cart." Whoops.

I did buy several pairs of more practical shoes when I was pregnant because as much as I really wanted to keep wearing all my awesome shoes, the extra 30 pounds and increased lack of balance really weren't letting that happen. (Increased lack? Does that even make sense?) My point is that I clearly am capable of buying practical shoes if it becomes a matter of necessity. It's just not nearly as fun. And somehow I feel like I'm not getting as much for my money. I know that is probably weird/ridiculous, but seriously. When I compare a pair of heels for $50 to a pair of flats for $50, the flats just seem like a rip-off. There is so much less shoe there! Kind of the same philosophy that leads me to buy 4 pairs of $20 shoes rather than 1 pair of $80 shoes. Why would I spend x amount of money on flats when I can spend the same amount and get an amazing pair of heels? I feel like flats should cost about half as much as heels. Really, does anybody else feel that way or am I totally on my own here?

On top of all that, I feel like heels just make an outfit look so much more put together. They are more professional, more composed, more sophisticated and refined. Perhaps this harks back to my not-so-secret wish that our society was less casual sometimes. I kind of long for the days when you got dressed up to fly and housewives walked around in dresses, heels, and pearls. Obviously there are many parts of the 50's and 60's that I am glad we left behind, or have at least tried to leave behind, like the racial inequality or the lack of seat belts. Or even on a purely superficial level, the black and white televisions and lack of cell phones. But I can't help watching shows like Mad Men and Pan Am (don't judge) and wishing that we were a little classier.

Like this lovely lady featured on the V&A website. Doesn't she just embody class and sophistication? Also, I'm sad that we don't wear hats anymore. Can somebody bring that back please? I will volunteer to learn millinery. I told my husband the other day that I want to be British royalty just so I can wear beautiful hats and not look silly.

Ha. When I started this post I was merely intending to explain my incredible weakness for all things high-heeled. Who knew it would lead me to my apparent issue with modern "casualness" (better called laziness or sloppiness most of the time) and my love of hats. Actually, I could probably write a whole separate post about hats...I have so much more to say on that topic! I guess you just never know what you're going to get here.

Lissa Nelsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584911371004698510noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1227418882148304040.post-31885001621380892092012-01-06T14:54:00.001-08:002012-03-19T11:24:44.381-07:00Shoe ConundrumWell so it's been a while. Lest you think I've lost my love for shoes (how tragic would that be?), make sure to check out the slideshow and see the several new pairs I've purchased since my last update.

I've run into an interesting conundrum lately. Come this fall, we will be moving to New York City and I will go from being a working girl to being a stay-at-home mom. So the issue at hand is that as a stay-at-home mom in NYC, I'm just not sure I see myself wearing all of these 3, 4, and 5 inch heels that I have. I mean, obviously there will be times here and there, but it will not be an every day thing like it is now--especially since we won't have a car and I will be doing a lot more walking.

So do I start buying more "practical" shoes now? Which brings up a whole other issue in that we are trying to live more frugally now since NYC will be super costly so my shoe purchases are going to have to decrease, at least for a little while. What does one wear around New York when you don't have practical shoes?? And why is it that "practical shoes" so often equal "ugly shoes"? I know, I know, there are lots of cute flats out there now. But still--when it really comes to good, comfortable walking shoes there aren't a lot of beautiful options out there. And let's face it, I like beautiful shoes.

Also, do I just wear my high heels around the house everyday for nobody but myself? Do I chase my toddler around in high heels (but then change shoes if we're going somewhere because we'll have to walk wherever we're going)?

My husband likes to tell me about all the women he has seen in NYC walking around in skirt suits and tennis shoes, like that might encourage me to be more practical. Silly man. It's like he doesn't even know me sometimes. No offense to you practical shoe people out there, but I would not be caught DEAD in a skirt and tennis shoes. I rarely wear tennis shoes as it is, but certainly not with anything other than casual clothing. I just won't do it. It looks stupid. There, I said it. You people walking around with your pantyhose and your sneakers: you look dumb. I know there are like a million of you in Manhattan and you could easily take me down, but that won't make it look like any less of a fashion faux pas. Obviously this is a hot-button topic for me.

I know some of you out there are probably thinking, "Just wait, once you've lived there and experienced it, you will change." Ok, maybe you're right. But I really don't think you are. I have been known to change my mind in the past, but this is one area where I just don't see that happening. At least not in the near future. I mean, maybe when I'm an old lady stuff like that just won't matter that much anymore (I don't get why that happens, but it totally does). But for the foreseeable future, don't count on it.

So next time you're in New York (after September 2012), come by and see me and admire my shoe collection--you may be the only person in NYC that gets to enjoy it. Or maybe you'll find out that I'm braving the streets in my heels for the amusement of others. Who knows.

Well that's enough of a rant for now. By the way, I'm open to suggestions on how to handle this NYC shoe thing.Lissa Nelsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584911371004698510noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1227418882148304040.post-77188398761974909812011-03-31T22:00:00.000-07:002011-04-01T10:43:03.509-07:00Shoe PhilosophyI've been thinking about my philosophy on shoes lately...there are a lot of different philosophies out there, but I think there are two main categories that really influence your individual philosophy: cost versus quality and comfort versus fashion. I've used my incredible artistic and computer graphic skills to create the charts below to demonstrate my point (click on each one to see it larger).

On the cost/quality scale, I would probably say I'm about a 2 or 3. I mean, hey--I wouldn't be able to have 90+ pairs of shoes otherwise. It's hard for me to spend over $100 on one pair of shoes (not that I haven't done it before) when I know I could get 3 or 4 pairs for the same amount somewhere else.

On the comfort/fashion scale I'm probably about an 8 or 9. Which if you think about it, you kind of have to be if you're a 2 or 3 on the comfort/quality scale. Cheap shoes aren't always made to be super comfortable--I guess it costs too much to make them cute AND comfortable.

What's interesting is that one of my sisters is practically the opposite--she wants/needs her shoes to be comfortable and she is generally willing to pay for that.

I know it's possible to be close to a 10 on both scale cuz, hey, if you care about shoes enough to spent that kind of money on them then it's very possible that you care enough about how you look to endure a lot of pain for that look.

What I'm curious about is if there are people out there that are close to 1 on both scales. Can you care that much about comfort and still find cheap shoes that will work for you? I guess there are people out there that are crazy good at finding incredible deals. You'd probably have to be one of those people to be on the lower end of both these scales...

Anybody care to opine? Where do you fit on the two shoe philosophy scales? Do you think there are other significant factors that I've forgotten?Lissa Nelsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584911371004698510noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1227418882148304040.post-8538093823719850592011-03-20T20:15:00.000-07:002011-03-20T20:37:36.315-07:00Buying shoes onlineSo in the last several months I have discovered several great websites for buying shoes online and thought I would share:

1 - Zappos.com: Can be pricey, but they are generally pretty quality shoes and they have free shipping both ways. They have some of the prettiest/most fun shoes I have seen.

2 - Shoebuy.com: Similar to Zappos--huge selection, free shipping both ways. In my experience (which is still limited) I have found some better deals at shoebuy.com, but not quite as many fun styles or colors in the price range I'm looking for. (I also posted a link for $$ off at shoebuy.com a few posts ago.)

3 - Shoedazzle.com: An interesting concept. It is similar to those CD or DVD clubs where they send you a selection each month except it does work a little differently. At the beginning of each month, they send you an e-mail letting you know your "showroom" for the month is ready. They give you a selection of 5-10 shoes in your showroom for you to choose from. Every pair costs $39.95. You can opt out each month so you're never required to buy anything (but if you don't opt out by a certain date, they charge you the $39.95 and you get a credit on your account).

4 - Justfab.com: Same idea as shoedazzle.com but I like having both so I get more selection options! :)

Also, I have finally updated my Current Shoes slide show below with several new pairs from the last 6 months. Look for the "New!" tag.Lissa Nelsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584911371004698510noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1227418882148304040.post-70117956858100734642011-02-11T12:36:00.000-08:002011-02-11T12:51:46.048-08:00ThoughtsI got some new shoes recently but haven't had a chance to take pictures yet...those should be coming to the slide show soon so keep an eye out.

So I've been thinking lately that sometimes finding the perfect pair of shoes for an outfit is very complicated. You would think with 80+ pairs of shoes, you would always have the perfect pair, but let me tell you--that is not the case.

For starters, there are so many different shades of each color...you can't just get a pair of red shoes and be good. There's dark red, candy apple red, bright red, and so many more. And red is one of the easier ones!

And don't even get me started on heel height. With some pants you need flats, for some pants you need 2 inch heels, for some pants you need 4 inch heels. So not only do you need at least 3 shades in each color, you also need at least 3 different heel heights in each shade. Oy!

Of course the reality is that you can't even find the shade you want half the time. If you are just looking for some fun colors of shoes, there are TONS of options out there, but if you are looking for a specific color...good luck! Especially if it's not a neutral color or red. Green seems to be a particularly difficult one to find if you want cute shoes in a particular shade. There aren't a ton of green options out there in general, so when you add in style preference and specific color wants/needs it gets very tricky.

And if color and heel height isn't enough, sometimes you just need a particular style to really complement the outfit. So even if you have 10 (or possibly more) different pairs of black shoes, sometimes you just do not have the right style and heel height combination. Or even the right style at all.

Ok, I don't want to seem ridiculous...I recognize that this is really not the worst problem in the world to have, but hey, we all have our trials. ;) Has anybody else experienced these issues, or is it just me??

(Oh by the way, check out the previous post for $10 off at www.shoebuy.com.)Lissa Nelsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584911371004698510noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1227418882148304040.post-43487280320258933662011-02-11T12:28:00.001-08:002011-02-11T12:28:40.119-08:00Here's $10 off at Shoebuy.com

"Shoes are so great! The presentation was on accountability so our presentation was kind of a joke about how nobody took accountability for the presentation and we all some excuse for not being there. We put together a slideshow with picture of everybody doing whatever their excuse was. My excuse was that there was a huge sale at Payless so during work one day, I went to Payless with a few coworkers to get some pictures. I had to try on some shoes and such so we could get good pictures and I just happened to find a couple really cute pairs on sale. How could I not get them? I mean, really. So check out the slideshow at the bottom of the page and look for the "NEW!" tag.Lissa Nelsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584911371004698510noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1227418882148304040.post-83471900115523677642009-07-28T12:00:00.000-07:002009-07-28T10:48:20.390-07:00So long, farewell...

Aren't these just fun? Part of my difficulty in getting rid of shoes is losing the memories (I know, I'm lame). This blog will give me a chance to record any memories I have of the shoes. This first post will have a lot of shoes due to the aforementioned cleansing. (By the way, if you see any shoes you might want, let me know and you can try them out; otherwise I will be taking them all to DI. They are all about size 7 or 7 1/2.)

Some summer sandals I got at Payless during my freshman year of college (when my shoe collection really started to grow).

Sandals from Bakers--my favorite shoe store for many years.
